Discovering the Depths of Our Roots through DNA

I have found some amazing information pertaining to my family's ancestry.  There is still so much more to uncover.  As I await the results of more tests that we have submitted, I decided to review a few of the ones that we are completed.

I tested my son at 23andme.com to learn his ancestry composition.  His father is from Cameroon with Nigeria origins.  What we found was pleasantly surprising.

Below are my DNA results from 23andme and Ancestry.com .

The Nigerian Movie That We Will Always Remember

My mother and I were watching this movie in 2008 near Fort Gordon, Georgia, when I went to the mailbox and received our Maternal DNA test results from AfricanAncestry.com (Bamileke of Cameroon) . This movie has a place in our family and history. Her favorite Naija actor is Olu Jacobs. This movie was the 1st African movie she had ever seen and she kept Shooshing me because it was so good! The moral is amazing. Good thing I had all of the parts of the movie.... LOL .

Til this day, she will tell me to put an African movie on her TV so she can watch it. This is a mother that was told that she was not considered an African many years ago by someone that came directly from the homeland. She was made to feel separated, called a half breed. Imaging the feeling of rejection.

DNA testing and the cultural exposure has shown her that no one can take Africa from her and she is proud of it. She would see scenes in a movie where they are sweeping the compound or pounding yam and she would saw, "We did things like that when I was growing up"... We swept just like that and we didn't pound yam, but we churned butter, we fetched wata from the well and cleared the land. All in Alcolu Village , Clarendon County, South Carolina . I would smile and tell her, Our culture NEVER left us. She KNOWS that now. Many of the Nollywood movies helped her to see that.

It is very important for us to see our similarities instead of focusing on the dividing differences. We are ONE.   From Africa to Alcolu, South Carolina.....The Bloodline NEVER changed...
